Their life

Andrei was a forester, a birdwatcher and a terrible cook. He walked the same ridge above the valley for almost forty years and kept a list of every species he saw there; by the end it ran to one hundred and sixty-two.

He was not a man of many words but he wrote postcards. Hundreds. From every town he ever passed through, to his wife, his daughters and eventually his grandchildren, always four lines long and always ending the same way: "Everything is in order here."

This page is a small example of what a memorial can look like — it is not a real person. Feel free to make it your own, or delete it.

Four lines, every time

Elena Ionescu· Daughter· Every year, without fail

Forty-one postcards. I counted them after he died. From Sibiu, from Brașov, from a petrol station outside Deva, from a hospital in Cluj where he spent six days and told nobody. Always the same four lines: what the weather was doing, whether the food was any good, a question about the dog, and then: everything is in order here. We found the last one in his jacket pocket. It was addressed to my son, who is three, and it had not been posted yet.
